Kia Ora, which literally means "be healthy" in Maori language, is normally used by Maori for greeting. Visitors to New Zealand all agree that traveling in the country is not so difficult; if you can drive and read maps, you are bound to enjoy one of the most challenging and fun-filled adventures you've ever had. ทะเลสาบวาคาทิปูเป็นทะเลสาบที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับที่สองของประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ตั้งอยู่ในเมืองควีนสทาว์น สิ่งที่นักท่องเที่ยวจะพลาดไม่ได้ก็คือ การนั่งเรือชมทะเลสาบ ซึ่งเรือที่นำพาเราไปสัมผัสความงดงามของทะเลสาบแห่งนี้ ไม่ใช่เรือธรรมดา ๆ แต่เป็นเรือกลไฟที่ใช้พลังงานถ่านหินและมีอายุเก่าแก่กว่า 90 ปีชื่อ "TSS Earnslaw"

The endless view of Wakatipu Lake

Wakatipu Lake, located in Queenstown, is the second largest lake in New Zealand. The must-not-miss thing for tourists is the lake cruise on the "TSS Earnslaw", which is not just a simple cruise boat but a coal-fired steamship aged more than 90 years.

Our first impression was the beautiful interior decoration, as well as the whistle, which strongly reminded us of the time of the Titanic when the elites enjoyed relaxing on the deck. Our impression didn't stop there as, apart from the beautiful clear blue lake that stretches off as far as the eyes can see, we were enchanted by the pleasant classical piano music throughout the journey. Not just that, the pianist also treated tourists with their national anthems.

 จุดหมายปลายทางในการนั่งเรือของพวกเราครั้งนี้คือ วอลเตอร์พีคฟาร์ม แม้ว่าจะต้องใช้เวลาอยู่ในเรือนานถึง 40 นาที แต่ความเพลิดเพลินที่ได้รับระหว่างทางนั้น ทำให้เรารู้สึกว่าระยะทางจากท่าเรือไปฟาร์มนั้นใกล้นิดเดียวเอง

Our destination for this boat trip was Walter Peak Farm. Though it normally took 40 minutes to get there, time flew as the entertainment along the way helped shorten the distance from the pier to the farm.

Lovely animals at Walter Peak Farm

Walter Peak Farm is a livestock farm that allows tourists to observe the farm life in New Zealand. As soon as the TSS Earnslaw boarded, we saw British-style cottage houses, surrounded by assorted flowers, distinctively located on the bank of a clear lake in the embrace of the mountains.

คุณลุงที่ดูแลฟาร์มแห่งนี้ออกมาต้อนรับพร้อมกับสุนัขคู่ใจ จากนั้นพาเราไปดูสัตว์ต่าง ๆ ที่เลี้ยงไว้ในฟาร์ม มีทั้งม้า ลามะ นกกระจอกเทศ วัวพันธุ์สก็อตติช ไฮแลนด์ ซึ่งคนไทยอย่างเราคงจะไม่คุ้นหน้าคุ้นตามันสักเท่าไหร่ แม้ว่าตัวมันจะใหญ่บึกบึน ดูน่าเกรงขาม แต่กลับเชื่องมาก ยอมให้ลูบหัวโดยไม่หนีไปไหน และยังได้ชื่นชมกับความน่ารักของเหล่าแกะน้อยนับร้อยตัวอีกด้วย เนื่องจากแทบทุกตารางเมตรของพื้นที่นอกเมืองในนิวซีแลนด์ เราจะเห็นแกะมากกว่าประชากรของประเทศเสียอีก นับว่าไม่แปลกเลยที่แกะถือเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของประเทศ

I am a Scottish Highland

The shepherd, together with his companion dog, greeted us and showed us all the farm animals including horses, lamas, ostriches, and Scottish Highland cows that we Thais are probably not familiar with. Though big, strong, and terrifying they might seem, these cows were actually docile. They allowed people to touch them without turning away. Also, we saw hundreds of adorable sheep as every square meter of New Zealand countryside is occupied by sheep - the animal's population is larger than that of humans - making them the symbol of the country.

Visitors to this farm therefore have an opportunity to closely observe these fluffy little creatures and learn more how to take care of them. They can learn yet more from a shearing demonstration and enjoy a sheepdog show that draws constant laughter from the audiences. In fact, Walter Peak Farm is a place which produces the worlds best- quality marino lamb wool in a country where wool products actually generate the highest income.

Shop till drop

After visiting the Farm, it was now time for shopping. Inside the souvenir shop, plenty of lovely products made of lamb wool such as clothing, chic scarves, hats, gloves, shoes that look nice and warm, and beauty products such as lipsticks, lotion and cream made of wool wax or lanolin in appealing packages. We had so much fun filling up our shopping baskets before bidding farewell to the city and continuing our journey by car.

The higher, the colder at Mount Cook National Park

After a long drive passing countless sheep farms, we finally saw a lofty mountain in front of us. "Mount Cook", the highest point in New Zealand, was  named after Captain James Cook, who discovered New Zealand. At such great height, it is covered with snow all year long.

Travelers visiting Mount Cook usually take a helicopter to observe the beautiful scenery from the bird's eye view. We also decided to embrace such a new experience too. As soon as we took off, the overwhelming picture of the vast Canterbury Plains appeared below us - tiny squares of green and yellow grass, lovely little houses, small animals scattering across the field, clouds stretching across the sky, and the shining sunlight on glittering water.

The white snow has such an intriguing charm

The feeling of freedom from flying made the heart beat faster. We looked around to cherish and imprint what we saw in our own memory as much as possible. The pilot took us through the white snow field along the mountain range before landing on the snow-capped mountain. We gradually stepped down from the helicopter, and as soon as our feet touched the snow, we could feel its fluffy texture. As we stepped further, we found ourselves almost knee-deep in the snow. There were only us and the purely white snow that had covered the mountain range for a century.

Turning back to Mt. Cook again an inexplicable beauty

The weather here was so cold that our hands felt numb. We thus had to take a deep breath, turned around to completely see the surrounding, and constantly pressed the shutter button before than pilot took us back, and this impressive flight would remain in our memory.

ในที่สุดวันที่เราจะต้องอำลาประเทศนี้ก็มาถึง ช่วงเวลาที่เครื่องบินทะยานขึ้นสู่ฟากฟ้า เราได้แต่ครุ่นคิดถึงสถานที่อันงดงาม และประสบการณ์ที่ได้พานพบ ณ ที่แห่งนี้ เราเข้าใจแล้วว่าทำไมผู้คนที่ได้มาเยือนที่นี่ถึงได้ร่ำลือถึงความงาม และประทับใจกันนักต่อนัก เป็นที่กล่าวขานกันว่า นอกเหนือจากสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวงดงามในเกาะใต้แล้ว นิวซีแลนด์ยังมีสถานที่แสนงดงามที่ดึงดูดให้นักท่องเที่ยวผู้หลงใหลธรรมชาติไปเยือนอยู่อีกมาก ซึ่งเราสัญญาว่าเราจะหาโอกาสไปเยือนและบันทึกเรื่องราวมาฝากท่านผู้อ่านอีกแน่นอน

Finally, there came the day when we had to say goodbye to New Zealand. Just when our plane took off, our thoughts raced back to the beautiful places and experiences that we had found there. We now understand why those who had visited the country kept talking about its beauty and their impression. It is said that besides that magnificent attractions on the South Island, New Zealand has a lot more to attract nature-loving tourists. And we promise we'll definitely seize another opportunity to visit the country and keep records of more stories for our readers again.
